[Gwen doesn't realize she woke him at first. She's staring at the screen, reading the second line again and again.
Murder of Peter Parker.
She knew that was her so-called crime in this place. She had looked at it, and promptly put it away and avoided looking at it or thinking about it again. It's not like she could ever forget her best friend died and she would forever carry the guilt of not being able to save him. She had already been faced with that again, here, wasn't that enough?
But she was pulled back to the present by hearing Peter speak, even if she didn't process any words that came out of his mouth.]
(funnily enough, he didn't even compute that part - which does say his name, loud and clear, mostly because he just read the last bits to look for a justification for the way her heart was nearly exploding.
his hand is on her shoulder. first things first, they need gear. they don't know what that means, what it could do, how it works.)
We don't know what's about to happen. We should-- we should be ready for anything. I don't feel... Any tingles, actually. So, we have time to think on what to do.
[Her heart is still racing, but Gwen does feel herself calm a little when she feels Peter's hand on her shoulder. It grounds her, steadies her, and she's able to take a few deep breaths to further help. The unknown is scary as hell, but she's Spider-Woman. She could handle anything. But he's right-- no tingles. Too bad she's too distracted to give him crap about calling it that.]
Right. No, you're right. That's why it caught me off guard. But I guess that makes sense. They're not trying to hurt me-- at least, not physically.
[She really didn't like this place, sometimes.]
It says I have two hours. That's more than enough time to figure out a plan.
I don't think they'll not let you attend, isn't this the whole point they have with this place... But, here's a plan. I have a tracker in the suit - and it has X-Ray and infrared, and augmentation with sound. We can try that.
(this is the first thing - the tech they have gotta be useful for something, anything. even if it isn't, it would tell them something. it's good that there are no tingles on either side, that's a start - it's not particularly dangerous, it's just nerve-wrecking.)
[But as he explains his plan, she nods. It's a good idea. She honestly doesn't know half of what his weird suit does, but at least it does something handy. She'll circle back to it, once she can stop thinking the worst.]
Do you think-- it's because I wouldn't play their game? In the Tower? I quit. I wouldn't fight. And now this?
[She can't be sure it's related, but it feels related, when the Tower fight was against Peter Parker.]
(he doesn't want to lie to her, it might as well have been, it might have been a coincidence, something all of them go through sooner or later, there's nothing there he can say for certain.
he does know this.)
We don't run from things, right? We're going, and you'll be fine. I'll be there, and I'll activate everything in that suit, yeah? You and me.
[It certainly helps any anxiety she feels, knowing her refuses to not stay by her side. She doubts he'd be able to go the whole way with her, but even knowing he'd be outside helps. She finds his hand now, squeezing it gently.]
Thank you.
[Okay. Focused. He's right, they don't run from things. She's faced way worse than this weirdo Jerry and his Council buddies.]
You said your suit has a tracker, right? Can you control it remotely, or does it just stay in place once you activate it? [She's having thoughts!! She's wondered ever since their conversation about the AI program on what's inside the City Council Building. She might not be able to investigate it herself, but if she can smuggle Peter's tech inside, maybe he can use it to look around while she's got Jerry and the Council's attention?]
(it's what he keeps promising - that they're together, doesn't matter what. he didn't compute the crime, because he knows it's not real, he knows it's not that, and it's not his focus in any shape or form. he wants her with him, focused, they can handle anything like that.)
I can control it, yeah, but without the GPS network, it's a bit strange. I don't know how it will work.
If I brought it inside with me, would I need to plant it? Think you could get information on what's inside City Hall from it?
[It's just an idea. She doesn't know if it will work, but it was certainly worth a try, right? Because if that AI hub was inside there like she wondered, if there was some sort of barrier blocking their ability to pick up on it, then maybe they could learn something from the inside.]
Yeah, me too. [Does she need to? Not really. Her suit isn't exactly fancy, expensive tech like his, but it feels wrong, to not suit up before a mission.]
No, it stays on you, unless I move it, but it's like a little drone-- but I don't know, I can't promise, but we can try.
(the tech works and doesn't work. some things are dependent on the stark network, which is connected to so many goddamn things - whether the GPS could work, they gotta check, maybe coordinates, maybe something, and even nothing is something in these uncertain times. so, he's quick to change, unbothered by the nakedness - nothing here she hasn't seen.)
Maybe we can put it in my hood? That way it's hidden. I don't know if they'll search me or not.
[Normally she would be more playful with him, changing into their suits like this, but she's distracted, thinking about what's about to happen and what her fate will be. Her spider-sense isn't freaking out, so she doubts she's in any real danger, but that doesn't mean this will be any fun.
But it's not long before she's fully changed, rocking between her feet at the door as she waits for him.]
I think that's a good one. Okay, let's get it-- just a second, okay? This thing without the AI-- I gotta do everything manually, so...
(the mask shows that he squints at times, his eye movements setting up the small drone that comes out of his suit. with care, he places it inside the hood, a little to her back, where it latches, before his hand meets hers.)
[Gwen nods, letting Peter do his thing. She only knows what he tells her about the suit, but it always blows her mind, the technology he has. And this Tony Stark guy just gave it to him??
But that's besides the point. She nods, trying to convey through her mask that his attempts to reassure her have helped, even if she still isn't quite sure how she feels right now.]
Yeah-- Yeah, I think so. [She gives his hand a squeeze, before leaning forward and resting her forehead against his. Masks are on, so no kissing for now, but it's still an intimate touch.] Thank you.
